Today is Mothers Day (in Australia) so to show my appreciation for all the mothers out there, the ones that support our hobbies and the ones who share these hobbies with us, I thought I would showcase all the MTG cards featuring mother in the name.
1. The first mother card isn't just a mother, she's a Grandmother, of the original MTG vampire - Sengir no less -
Not exactly an amazing MTG card (homelands was super underpowered) but Grandmother Sengir is drenched in wonderful gothic horror flavor.
2. The next mother released is the MTG card most people associate with the word Mum/Mom -
A multi-format all star, with flavor text that embodies motherly protection, Mother of Runes is the quintessential MTG mother.
3. The next mother card in MTG is a reference to the last one -
The humorous unhinged homage to Mother of Runes, the Mother of Goons.
4. The next mother was the first non-human mother card -
One of the Kamigawa family of Snake/Orochi legends Sakiko is a bit of a forgotten gem for EDH.
5. The non-human mother trend continues with -
A very much not forgotten EDH gem, Wort, the Raidmother is also the mother featuring the most children in her art.
6. The next mother on the list is not only non-human, they aren't even humanoid -
Another solid EDH and Tribal card, Dragon Broodmother shows off being a mother in name, art and in mechanics.
7. The next card has mother in the name but maybe isn't a mother by nature -
Nothing particularly motherly about Phyrexian Vatmother, she's also a 2 edged sword when it comes to infecting people.
8. Another non-humanoid mother and the 2nd un-card on this list -
An appropriate mother card for Australian Mothers Day, our national animal, the Kangaroo (a big shout out to all Aussie Mums).
9. Yet another non-humanoid but much more motherly mother is -
Name, Flavor text, art and mechanics Mother Bear screams motherhood with everything she does, she's also a nice card for an Ayula bear tribal deck.
10. The last card is maybe not strictly speaking a mother -
But Faerie Guidemother's reference to the fairy godmother and thus godmothers in general is a nice thing to see on Mothers day (a big shoutout to all the godmothers).
Thanks for reading, I hope you enjoyed this list and maybe found a few new cards you didn't know about. What's your favorite MTG mother card? Can you think of any I missed? Responses and feedback here or on TabletopLG social media is always appreciated.
Finally another massive shoutout to all the mothers out there, you are all simply magical.
